1. PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION
- Ensure the mining operation delivers ore for processing safely, at budgeted tonnes, grade, and at the lowest cost.
- Generation and review of current and future pit designs, waste dumps, haul roads and other mining infrastructure.
- Engaging and empowerment of Senegalese employees to build capacity and align with MGO's nationalisation strategy.
- LOM input to maximise NPV including project evaluation.
- Monitor mining performance, with a view to constant improvement on safety, quality and costs.
- To achieve the above objectives with due consideration to the environment, statutory obligations and the efficient management of the company's assets and human resources.
2. ROLE OF DEPARTMENT/SECTION
- The Mine Engineering department is responsible for the planning, scheduling and tracking of all mining activities. It is one of the key drivers for the success of the operation and as such is responsible for:
- Preparation and distribution of budgets, forecasts and plans and schedules.
- Collection of relevant data; interpretation and analysis of the data; and management of data quality.
- Contribution to the delivery of business outcomes by ensuring the timely distribution of accurate information to enable management decision making.
3. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Systems
- Development and maintenance of accurate and timely data capture, reporting and activity based procedures.
- Communication of all plans, schedules and relevant information to affected parties.
- Critical review of current practices and systems with a continuous improvement mindset.
Information
- Ensure the production of accurate and timely information for the site customers in compliance with instructions/procedures for assigned tasks.
- Provide scenario analyses and input into current and future mining activities.
- Provision of training and support to ensure Senegalese employees improve their skills accordingly.
Mine Planning and Scheduling
- Accountable for all aspects of mine design including liaising with the Technical Services group.
- Development of scenarios and cost/benefit analyses for improving mining efficiencies.
- Responsible for short and medium term mine planning and scheduling on site using software such as Vulcan, MineSched and spreadsheets.
- Ensuring achievable schedules are produced for production, budgeting and forecasting purposes; this includes short (weekly and three month rolling plan); medium (yearly and forecast); and LOM planning and scheduling.
- Optimal haulage profiles and associated pit and dump designs.
- Liaising and engaging with external contractors for auditing purposes (eg safety and geotechnical).
Drill & Blast
- Responsible for drill and blast designs and associated evaluation and feedback systems, with the aim to balance the competing needs of:
- Safe & efficient blasting including improvement of geotechnical conditions.
- Fragmentation.
- Powder Factor.
- Heave and movement of material (i.e. minimising ore dilution).
- Work with production personnel, D&B team, explosives contractor and geologists to ensure the above is achieved.
Survey
- Supervision and development of the Survey team.
- Organise the team for maximum performance.
- Provision of tools and equipment and an environment to ensure the success of the Operation within Survey's sphere of influence.
Reporting
- Responsible to ensure production and cost data across all the mining activities is captured and reported in a timely manner; this includes daily, weekly, monthly and yearly reporting.
- Ensure all data is checked and validated to ensure its integrity.
- Responsible for presentation of data for the weekly, monthly and yearly reports.
- Responsible for preparing data for generation of budgets.
- Ensure quarterly production schedules and forecasts are produced on a rolling monthly basis to meet production budget.
- Preparation and/or review of all mining reports.

- Mentor and actively participate in the development of junior personnel to increase their skills and mining knowledge.
- Ensure there are training and development plans for each employee.

- Ensure all performance reviews are conducted.

8. POSITION HOLDER'S REQUIREMENTS
8.1 Knowledge, Training & Experience Required e.g. qualifications or experience:
- Mining Engineering Degree
- Minimum of 10 years' of experience in mining operations, preferably gold.
- Demonstrated experience working with, coaching and mentoring employees with diverse backgrounds
- Demonstrated technical expertise in mine planning and knowledge of open pit mining operations
8.2 Practical/Specialist Skills: e.g. Keyboard, Software Distribution, etc.:
- High level of computer skills and knowledge of MS Office Suite, CAD software, Scheduling software, preferably Vulcan and/or Surpac.
8.3 Other Skills or Competencies:
- Strong communication skills, ability to speak and write in English.

9. WORK HOURS/SHIFT/ROSTER
- Work from 0600 to 1700, or as required
- Roster - Expatriates: 8 weeks (56 days) on site 4 week (28 days) off site or 6 weeks on site / 3 weeks off site.
